Wes & Rick's Pix

    A Celebration of Texas Filmmakers

Experience cinema through the eyes of two of Texas's most celebrated filmmakers, Wes Anderson and Richard Linklater.

The Wes & Rick's Pix series is a special program that celebrates the cinematic influences of these acclaimed directors, both of whom spent their formative years watching films at the historic River Oaks Theatre in Houston. The films in this series are hand-selected by Wes Anderson and Richard Linklater themselves, and are films they believe deserve to be seen on the big screen and with an audience.

    Featured Films in the Series

    • sex, lies, and videotape (1989): Selected by Wes Anderson, this Steven Soderbergh film was the inaugural installment of the series.
    • Taxi Driver (1976): Richard Linklater selected this Martin Scorsese masterpiece because it was influential to him as one of the most memorable and impactful films he watched at the River Oaks Theatre.
    • The Piano (1993): Wes Anderson selected this Jane Campion film, winner of the Palme d’Or and three Academy Awards.
    • Harold & Maude (1971): This cult classic by Hal Ashby was selected by Richard Linklater.
    • The Crying Game (1992): An Academy Award-winning film by Neil Jordan, selected by Wes Anderson.
    • Badlands (1973): Richard Linklater selected this Terrence Malick film.
    • Wings of Desire (1987): Selected by Wes Anderson, this Wim Wenders film is described as one of cinema's loveliest city symphonies.
    • Breathless (1960): Richard Linklater chose this Jean-Luc Godard film as a perfect chance to see it before the release of his own film, Nouvelle Vague, which is a tribute to the French New Wave.

    More Than Just a Movie

Each screening is part of the "Art In The Arthouse" program. This multi-disciplinary experience is unlike any other in Houston, often featuring live performances by local artists and musicians to create a rich, multi-disciplinary experience. Attendees can also arrive early to enjoy dinner and drinks at the theatre and browse a table of curated film books from Brazos Bookstore. Many of the screenings also feature a special video message from either Wes Anderson or Richard Linklater.

Your donations help us continue bringing this unique series to life. As a community-based nonprofit, Arthouse Houston relies on the support of passionate individuals like you to make the "Wes & Rick's Pix" series a reality.
