Blue Velvet
The discovery of a severed human ear found in a field leads a young man on an investigation related to a beautiful, mysterious nightclub singer and a group of criminals who have kidnapped her child.

Friends of River Oaks Theatre will host a special screening consisting of new short films made by inspired artists, followed by Fritz Lang’s groundbreaking science fiction epic, Metropolis, accompanied by an original live score by Omar Vincent Al-Bochi (aka: Vincent Priceless). This event is a colaboration with Buffalo Bayou Partnership and will be held at the Water Works at Buffalo Bayou Park, doors are at 7:00pm, shorts at 7:30pm, Metropolis with live score immediately follows. The version of Metropolis shown will be the 1984 Moroder cut.

About the Inspired Short Film Awards:

This year Metropolis entered the public domain, making footage available for artists and filmmakers everywhere to express themselves with the film as source material as a jumping off point. Friends made an open call on FilmFreeway for artists to create and submit short films inspired by and using elements from Metropolis, to be screened at this event. There will be an audience award given to the top film choice on the night of the event.

Don’t miss out on Houston Cinema Arts Festival 2023!

HCAF 2023 will feature a wide variety of curated feature films with a focus on the diverse cultural community of Houston, Texas. 

HCAF 2023 will also see the return of CineSpace, the annual short film competition with NASA, as well as the fourth annual regional short film competition Borders | No Borders.

Join us for a special free outdoor screening of Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood, co-presented by Friends of River Oaks Theatre and The Menil Collection. This 2022 animated coming-of-age comedy-drama film is set during the events preceding the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, loosely based on the childhood of writer, director, and producer Richard Linklater. It presents a fictional tale of a fourth-grader who becomes the first person to land on the Moon and stars Glen Powell, Jack Black, Zachary Levi, and Josh Wiggins. Arrive at 7:30 PM for the pre-show activities including, music curated by DJ Vincent Priceless and introductions by Craig Staggs, producer/character animator for the film, and OSTEM member Steven Smith. The film begins at 8:30 PM. Picnic blankets are encouraged.

Linklater, who originally got the idea for the film in 2004, was planning to create the film in live-action but instead decided to go with an animation style influenced by Saturday morning cartoons, due to the playful nature of animation. Home movies created in Houston, Texas during the 1960s were used for research, and some were also included in the film. Principal photography began in February 2020 at Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas, and wrapped in March 2020. Parts of the film were done in front of the largest green screen in Texas and other parts of the film, which were shot in live-action, were animated during post-production using a technique similar to the rotoscoping used in Linklater’s Waking Life (2001) and A Scanner Darkly (2006). Apollo 10½ premiered at South by Southwest on March 13, 2022. Maturity Rating: PG-13.

This program is in conjunction with the installation: Moon Landing, 1969, a trio of “Date Paintings” by Japanese-born Conceptual artist On Kawara (1932–2014), on view at the Menil Collection as a special loan from Glenstone Museum, Potomac, Maryland.

The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art presents "Old, Weird Houston," a local alternative history fair and symposium that preserves, interprets, and shares the hidden histories of unusual and creative people, institutions, and events that have made our city one of the most diverse and livable in the country.

Organized collaboratively with Archivists of the Houston Area (AHA!) and the University of Houston Center for Public History, "Old, Weird Houston" features a day-long schedule of speakers and panels, from a keynote address to presentations by students active in the fields of history and library science. Regional archives both private and public display offbeat, rarely-seen materials from their collections in a fair-style setting along with food trucks and vendors specializing in Houston-proud books, crafts, and apparel.
